About the CHSM™ Credential

The Certified Health and Safety Manager (CHSM™) is AISP’s flagship certification for professionals responsible for leading, implementing, and maintaining workplace health and safety programs. It is an intensive, industry-focused credential designed to equip candidates with the knowledge and competencies required to manage occupational health and safety across diverse industries — including regulatory compliance, risk assessment, safety program development, emergency response, and safety leadership.

The CHSM™ is a single, uniform credential regardless of where the training is delivered. Whether a candidate prepares through AISP directly or through one of AISP’s Authorized Training Partners, the certification originates from and is awarded by one source: the American Institute of Safety Professionals (AISP).

Awarding Body — American Institute of Safety Professionals (AISP)

The CHSM™ credential is issued solely under the authority of AISP. AISP owns the CHSM™ program, sets and maintains its curriculum and examination standards, and is the sole awarding body for the certification. Training toward the CHSM™ may be delivered by AISP or by its Authorized Training Partners under authorization; however, the credential itself, and the right to award it, belong exclusively to AISP.

All CHSM™ certificates are issued under AISP’s authority and are verifiable through AISP’s official verification system.

Program Objectives

On completing the CHSM™ program, participants will be able to:

• Master the core principles of workplace health and safety, including hazard recognition, risk assessment, and safety program development.
• Identify workplace hazards, evaluate risks, and implement effective control measures.
• Understand and apply health and safety regulations and recognized industry standards to maintain legal compliance and protect workers.
• Assess risks, make informed decisions, and implement preventive measures to protect workers and the public.
• Lead incident management, including investigation, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action implementation.
• Design and maintain comprehensive safety programs that prioritize worker health and safety and reflect best practice.

The CHSM™ curriculum and its modules are maintained and periodically updated by AISP to remain aligned with evolving industry needs and regulatory standards.

Eligibility

To pursue the CHSM™ credential, candidates should meet at least one of the following criteria:

• A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution; and/or
• Relevant professional work experience in a related field.

Candidates who do not hold a bachelor’s degree but possess significant relevant professional experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to AISP’s evaluation.

Examination and Certification

The CHSM™ certification is awarded following successful completion of the CHSM™ examination, administered in accordance with AISP’s standards. The examination assesses the core certification modules listed above. On successful completion, candidates are awarded the Certified Health and Safety Manager (CHSM™) credential by AISP.
